What is the World Alliance Youth Committee ?

In March 2007 the World Alliance Committee on Youth Participation and Leadership had its first meeting since being elected at the World Council in 2006. The Committee is a standing committee of the World Alliance Executive Committee.

One of the main aims of the Committee is to promote the genuine participation of young people in meaningful decision-making within the YMCA Movement.

The members of the Youth Committee come from different countries. They are :

USA: Courney Lawrence

Nigeria : Aisa Akapson

Ghana : Charles Habiah

England: Jennie Marie Glover

The Committee made some key recommendations which were adopted by the World Alliance Executive Committee :

Youth Committee Recommendations :

1. Youth Leadership and Participation

> Areas and national movements ensure genuine participation of young people by integrating 30% young leader representation in all aspects of the decision-making bodies. National Movements and Area Alliances which do not have a Youth Committee are encouraged to create one.

> Areas and national movements/offices to assist the World Alliance Youth Committee in collecting information for a database to facilitate knowledge mapping of youth leadership and participation in governance at their respective regions.

2. Capacity Building and Transformational Leadership

> Areas facilitate and strengthen youth exchange programs both within and between regions, focusing on key young leaders, including the World Alliance Youth Committee Members.

> World Alliance supports and facilitates a Global Youth Leadership training by November 2007 for at least 30 key leaders strategically identified by the Areas.

> Areas and World Alliance to seek partnerships with ecumenical youth organisations thereby ensuring that the Christian and ecumenical identity of the YMCA is upheld.

3.  Communication/Networking

> Areas and national movements/offices assist the World Alliance Youth Committee in facilitating the continuous communication and networking of the World Alliance Youth Committee and the Area/National Youth Committees.

Update from the Youth Committee, October 2007

A Youth Caucus was held before the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs General Assembly 5-10 September in Thailand. Young leaders were clear that their aim is integration into YMCA decision making – not parallel processes. They were very vocal during the Assembly and had a major impact.

Courtney Lawrence and others have been active in helping to develop more space for  young people in the national decision making structures in the YMCA of the USA. Watch this space for more news.

In Europe the YES Group – YMCA Europe Spectrum – has been active. The YES Group is for young people (16-30) to have a voice within YMCA Europe on subjects of concern to them. YES aims to have a member from each YMCA in Europe.

The Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs held its second Youth Forum in Peru in September. There were 49 participants from 14 national movements in the region. Their agenda included issues of youth leadership and citizenship as well as  developing a regional training programme for young YMCA leaders. After the Forum some of the participants went to the area devastated by the earthquake in Peru for 2 days to work with the victims.

Que es el Comite Juvenil de la Alianza Mundial ?

Comite de Participacion Juvenil y Liderazgo de la Alianza Mundial es un Comite permante del Comite Ejectuvo, el cual el pasado mes de marzo tuvo su primera reunion desde su eleccion en el Consejo Mundial en 2006. Uno de los principales objetivos del Comite es promover la genuina participacion de los jovenes en los mas significativos cuerpos de decision dentro del momviento ACJ.

El Comite Juvenil esta conformado por jovenes  de paises como : Filipinas, Chile, Estados Unidos, Nigeria, Peru e Inglaterra quienes mantienen permanente comunicacion de forma virtual y a su vez se reunen anualmente paralelo a la reunion del Comite Ejecutivo.

En su primera reunion el Comite hizo las siguientes  recomendaciones las cuales fueron adoptadas por el Comite ejecutivo de la Alianza Mundial.

Recomendaciones Comite Juvenil

1. Liderazgo Juvenil y paticipación

Las Áreas y los movimientos regionales aseguran la participacion  y representacion de los jovenes en un 30% en todos los aspectos, en los cuerpos de  toma de decisiones.

Las Área y los movimientos nacionales apoyan al Comite Juvenil de la Alianza a recopilar una base de datos que facilite el mapeo de liderazgo juvenil y participacion y gobernanza en las distitas regiones.

2. Fortalecimiento de la Capacidad y Liderazgo Transformador

Las Áreas facilitan y fortalecen programas de intercambio juvenil dentro y entre las regiones en lideres claves incluyendo la Alianza Mundial y los miembros del Comite Juvenil.

La Alianza Mundial, apoya y facilita un entrenamiento de liderazgo juvenil para por lo menos 30 lideres clave, estrategicamente seleccionador por las áreas.

Las Áreas y la Alianza Mundial buscan partners con organizaciones juveniles ecuménicas, de tal modo que asegire la identidad cristiana y ecumenica de la ACJ.

3. Comunicacion/ Redes

Las Áreas y los movimientos nacionales apoyan el comite Juvenil de la Alianza Mundial en facilitar, mantener continua comunicacion y contacto del Comite Juvenil de la Alianza Mundial y  los Comites juveniles nacionales y de Área.

Se tomaron en cuenta las recomendaciones del Consejo Mundial Juvenil realizado en Sud Africa en 2006

Actualizacion del Comite Juvenil, Octubre de 2007

Un Foro Juvenil, fue celebrado antes de la Asamblea General de la Alianza Asiatica y del Pacifico entre el 5-10 de septiembre en Tailandia.  Jovenes lideres fueron claros que su proposito es la intregracion dentro  de la toma de decisiones en la ACJ-no como proceso paralelo.  Fueron muy sonados durante la Asamblea y tuvieron mayor impacto.

Courtney Lawrence y otros jovenes han estado activos en ayudar a generar mas espacios para los jovenes en las estructuras nacionales de toma de decisiones en  la ACJ de Estados Unidos.

En Europa el  Grupo YES (Espectro Europeo ACJ) ha estado activo. El grupo YES esta conformado por jovenes de 16-30 años para tener  un voz dentro de la ACJ de Europa en temas que les concierne. El proposito de YES es tener un miembro de cada ACJ en Europa.

La Alianza Latinoamericana y del Caribe de ACJs celebro su II Foro Juvenil en el mes de Septiembre en Peru. Hubo 49 participantes de 14 movimientos nacionales de la region. Su agenda incluyo temas de liderazgo juvenil y ciudadania, asi como el desarrollo de un programa regional de formacion para jovenes lideres ACJ. Despues del Foro, algunos participantes fueron por 2 dias al Area devastada por el terremo para trabajar con los damnificados.
