The CEDAW (Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women) adopted in 1979, by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women. Consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, it defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination.

The Commission on the Status of Women(CSW) - Follow up to Beijing and Beijing+5 prepares recommendations and reports to the Economic and Social Council on promoting women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields. The Commission also makes recommendations to the Council on urgent problems requiring immediate attention in the field of women's rights.
