The General Secretary of the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs held meetings with the leaders of the Medan YMCA - Poltak, Jonathan and Arnold, together with a National Board member, and some volunteer leaders just returned from Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
The Medan YMCA is part of an 8-member network of 8 Service Organisations and the YMCA is responsible for logistics and volunteer recruitment. So far emergency evacuation work and distribution of relief packages to survivors have been carried out by teams of between 8 to 17 young people to Banda Aceh, Meulabor, and Nias Island. They have been mapping needs and resources and also what was available within the country.
Nanda, a volunteer leader who had recently returned from Banda Aceh, shared information about the destruction of the city. The initial team had assisted in evacuation and did a mapping of needs in the area they visited. Information arriving from Nias puts the death toll at over 250 and 290+ houses destroyed.
After the assessment/mapping carried out in Aceh, Meluebor, Berian, Lohksumane, and Nias, the YMCA in Indonesia will determine and work out tentative proposals/plans for:
I. Recovery of Livelihood
1. Recovery of agricultural land (due to inundation by sea water)
2. Recovery of water sources (wells)
3. Recovery of economic activities and alternative forms of economic activities
II. Healing and Protection of children and the vulnerable
, e.g. the orphans, the widows, the elderly, the differently-abled. Provisions of temporary shelters.
III. Rehabilitation plans for focus area selected after the mapping exercise and plans made involving the community.
