This year the Alliance of Youth CEOs is celebrating its 10 anniversary. The Alliance, which represents the widest component of organised youth movements in the world,
aims to raise international awareness on youth issues through its advocacy work.
The group, which comprises the Chief Executive Officers of the World Alliance of YMCAs, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the World Alliance of YMCAs, the World Young Women's Christian Association, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the World Organisation of the Scout Movement and the International Award Association, first met in 1996 as they realised their 6 movements had great potential for joint advocacy work for young people.
The group remains an informal network of the 6 CEOs, with no statutes and no chairman. Its aim is to influence advocacy work and to co-operate at field level.
Besides a youth forum on HIV and AIDS and an inter-generational initiative to empower young people in Africa, four publications have been prepared by the Alliance, including "Girls and Young Women in the 21st Century: A call to action" and, together with UNICEF, "Children and Young People: Participating in Decision-Making. A Call for Action." Many Ministers of Education have consulted Alliance publications when drawing up their national education policies.
Plans for the future of the Alliance include strengthening the cooperation between the 6 youth organisations at country level and building on the success of their work to change the way that policy decisions regarding young people are made, giving young people more of a voice.
The 10th anniversary of the Alliance was celebrated in Geneva on 2 June, hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The World Alliance of YMCAs seeks to work closely with other youth organisations so that together we can maximise our impact on issues affecting young people. Due to our size, reputation and experience, the World Alliance is often approached by international organisations.
The Alliance of Youth Chief Executive Officers
The World Alliance of YMCAs belongs to a group of the biggest youth organisations in the world known as the "BIG 6" - officially termed the Alliance of Youth Chief Executive Officers. Besides the World Alliance of YMCAs, these are:
ˇ YWCA (World Young Women's Christian Association)
ˇ WOSM (World Organization of the Scout Movement)
ˇ WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts)
ˇ IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies)
ˇ IAA (International Award Association)
The main goal is to work together on policy issues affecting young people. These are documents that have been produced by the BIG 6:
ˇ A Call to Action. Children and Young People - Participating in Decision-Making
ˇ The Education of Young People. A Statement at the Dawn of the 21st Century
ˇ National Youth Policies. Towards an Autonomous, Supportive, Responsible and Committed Youth
ˇ Girls and Young Women in the 21st Century
Collectively, the network reaches over 100 million young people in over 200 countries and territories.
The International Co-Ordination Meeting of Youth Organisations (ICMYO)
Another platform for exchanging best practices, informing each other about youth policy and lobbying international institutions, especially the UN, on youth issues is the International Co-Ordination Meeting of Youth Organisations (ICMYO). This is an informal network of membership-based, democratic, representative and accountable International Youth NGOs and Regional Youth Platforms . ICMYO is comprised of 26 organisations that meet at least once a year. The World Alliance of YMCAs is on the steering committee of ICMYO together with the International Movement of Catholic Students (Pax Romana), the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the European Youth Forum (EYF).
