Brief YMCA History

The Zimbabwe National Council of YMCAs was established in 1968 with a mission to unite young people of christian faiths transcending all divisions and barriers of class, creed, colour, role gender, age, nationality and religious denominations or political persuasions. Among its objectives the YMCA strives to provide facilities, programmes and activities designed to enrich spiritual mental, cultural and physical development. The organization seeks to develop civil society by conscietising communities and YMCA members on human rights issued as well as facilitating and designing self-reliance programmes.

 

The YMCA has five branches and 28 activity groups dated around the country. The Zimbabwe YMCA is currently carrying out a number of programmes and projects to improve the socio-economic well-being of individuals and communities. These programmes include Family Life Education, Cattle fattening, Disaster relief, Civic Education, Youth Camping, Brick-making, Draught power, Provision gender sensitation, Carpentry, Dressmaking, Art and market gardens.

 

Mission Statement

The mission statement of Zambia YMCA was formulated through a process taking into consideration the elements of the mission statements of the constituent local associations of Zambia YMCA.

 

"The Young Men's Christian Association is a membership driven organization voluntary and ecumenical movement for young people (male and female) rooted in God's love manifested in Jesus Christ.

 

The Zambia YMCA shall be prophetic and active in Christian fellowship, advocacy and self-help activities in order to empower and transform communities especially the youth in open and creative ways."

Main Programmes

The Zimbabwe National Council of YMCA programmes are aimed at empowering individuals and communities through skills provision, economic empowerment, spiritual mental and physical development.

 

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The Zimbabwe YMCA runs a vocational skills training centre in Harare which offers academic, courses, vocational courses and technical skills in computers, capentry and art. Every year over 2000 students pass through the centre and graduants are integrated into the industry to contribute to the growth of the country's economy.

 

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

Unemployment among youth in Zimbabwe is very high. 48% of the employable youth are unable employed. The Zimbabwe YMCA has established brick-making, carpentry, art, cattle fattening, market gardens and draught power.

 

CIVIC AWARENESS

The Zimbabwe YMCA is carrying out a Family Life Education programme to sensitive community of family life, adolescent reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, gender and orphan care. The programme targets youth but also involves adults.

 

SPIRITUAL, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

The YMCA runs workcamps and international camps where youth come and share experiences in a cross-cultural camp. These camps involve adventuring, fellowshipping, safari, games, sports and discussion on topical issue affecting youth for example the HIV/AIDS epidemic, globalisation of the world economies and others.

 

DISASTER RELIEF

The YMCA response to local disaster situations which are either as a result of cyclones, drought and famine. The Zimbabwe YMCA has built over 35 two roomed houses for people in Beitbridge who were victims of Cyclone Eline disaster which struck in the summer season of 1999/2000. The relief programmes are carried out with assistants of partners of the Zimbabwe YMCA world-wide.

 

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Zimbabwe YMCA works with various communities empowering them so as to improve their living conditions. Some of the projects involve provision of clean water for drinking and market gardening; provision of toilets, cattle restocking and draught power provision.
