Global appeal for emergency relief support for Kerala, India

Date: 17 August 2018

Emergency Kerala

Dear friends,

The YMCA movement is saddened to see the impact of floods and the cost of lives in Kerala, India.

We are launching an appeal for financial resources to provide emergency relief.

The YMCA has a significant presence in this vulnerable area and the YMCAs of the South West India Region of YMCAs has already mounted a massive campaign for relief and rehabilitation among the flood affected.

The following report comes from Mani Kumar, the NGS of the National Council of YMCAs of India:

“The television channels across the globe are replete with visuals of the devastation wrought by nature’s fury in Kerala over the last two weeks with a ferocity unprecedented in this part of India since 1924. There has been huge loss of life, both human and cattle as well as property and unprecedented displacement of people. Standing crops have been damaged and houses and roads devastated.

The loss to the exchequer is unprecedented with a cascading and crippling effect on the economy. The deluge continues as rains show no sign of abating. More rains are predicted by the Meteorological Department in the coming days and therefore more misery for people of the 14 districts of Kerala. The National Council of YMCAs of India in the wake of the floods and heavy rain in Kerala have sent out urgent appeals across the Indian YMCA Movement for generous contributions to complement and supplement the efforts of the SWIR and to express their solidarity with the people of Kerala and the YMCA constituency.”

We are standing with the YMCAs of India in solidarity and prayer.
