Brief YMCA History

The National Council of YMCAs of Jamaica was inaugurated during a District Conference of the Y's Men's Club held in St. Catherine in 1966. This development was a significant stage of organisational development in co-ordination of the existing YMCAs - Kingston, Spanish Town, Vere, Montego Bay including the affiliate District Council of Y's Men's Club. This Council has enabled more regularised communication with other National, Area Council and the World Alliance of YMCA - Geneva. Grace Kennedy for over nine (9) years seconded Mr. Basil Ferguson who acted as National General Secretary. During that period reasonable efforts were made to maintain and keep in contact, a communication system so that the YMCAs were kept informed on activities of the YMCA both locally and internationally. On many occasions when meetings were called these had to be cancelled or postponed as the attendance was very poor and in some instances only one or two persons responded. The Council has had problems in fulfilling its mandate as great difficulties have been experienced in identifying and/or its inability to raise the necessary funds so that it can be an effective Council, thus the impact of the Council on the YMCAs movement in Jamaica is very minimal.
