Brief YMCA History

Born since nearly one hundred fifty years, the UCJG were, in 1855, Co-founder of the World Alliance of the UCJG/YMCA.

They are represented near several international institutions (UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the EEC).

 

Pioneers of initiative education mutual aid, the UCJG launched the first international meetings and oecumenical (Paris, 1855), the general-purpose hearths of youth (Paris, 1892 - Le Havre, 1933 - Toulouse, 1957 - Lyon, 1962), the female movement, the student movement, unionist scouting (1911 - 1920), the camp-site, the tennis shoe, volleyball.

Since 1914/1918, the UCJG/YMCA caused hearths of soldiers and a service of assistance to the prisoners of war.

 

After 1940/1945, the UCJG/YMCA collaborated in the birth of the service of assistance to the immigrants and contributed to the greeting and the reclassification of refugees (1936 - Spaniards, 1956 - Hungarians, 1974 - Chilean, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians.).

 

The UCJG were founder members :

- CIMADE

- the French Council of the Youth movements, (CFMJ),

- Union of the Centers of Full Air, (UCPA),

- Studies and Building sites,

- Department Youth of the Protestant Federation.

 

The UCJG are members of the CNAJEP (Committee for the national and international relations of associations of youth and popular education), of the CCSC (Coordinating committee for the non-military national service), of the Protestant Federation of France and, for this reason, with the department youth at the commission of the International relations.

Mission Statement

Opening to others :

Understanding citizenship, discovering other countries and cultures, learning to build peace, Information and reflection with "Triangle", the YMCA's in-house journal.

 

Self-fulfilment :

Training in group leadership, teaching methods, development, following professional training, enjoining summer camps, practising sports and physical activities.

 

Living together :

Working for solidarity, welcoming refugees,, helping to social integration, aiding in the search for work, sharing daily experiences at drop in centres, social housing, young people "foyers", work rehabilitation homes.

Main Programmes

OUR ACTIONS :

On all the French territory and throughout the year, the local groups organize multiple and varied activities. Camps of young people to the international meetings, greeting of refugees, with the formation of the most stripped, accompaniment of the young people in difficulties, with education, with the development, the UCJG are in the heart of problems which touch youth today.

 

Sector Training :

Vocational training, training of organizer and directors of centres of holidays (BAFA/BAFD) in close links with the CPCV.

 

Sector Travel and Meetings :

- Selection of hotels YMCA in the principal cities of the USA to reserve starting from France

- Franco-German Stays.

 

Sector Solidarity, Justice and Development :

Greeting of the refugees, actions of insertion and accompaniment in the search of employment, education to peace and the international life, contributes to the creation of company, implementation of actions of international solidarity (Togo, Lebanon, Balkans) and support for campaigns such as the equitable trade or the handing-over of the debt.

 

Sector Places of Life :

Centre of meeting, centres of leisures and sports activities in France, hearths of young workers, training colleges by work. Modestly, through all these actions, the UCJG try to share and live various readings of the Gospel, " so that all is one ".
