Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that aims to unleash the power of people and organisations to transform their communities and the world by promoting giving.
On 1 December 2020, World YMCA is proud to support an initiative by YMCA Ethiopia to improve the lives of single mothers and their children, who have been forced into poverty as a result of Covid-19.
Help YMCA Ethiopia support single mothers and their children with food, shelter and the chance to build a better future
Alemtsehay is a 23-year-old single mother with two sons. Nahom, her oldest child, is 4 years old. He suffers from chronic pneumonia. The family lives in a cramped rented house in Addis Ababa. Before the pandemic, Alemtsehay earned a living selling coffee and tea on the street and washing clothes for families in the local neighborhood. Her income was small, but it was enough to sustain her family. The outbreak of Covid-19 changed everything. Her business stopped, and her income disappeared.
Unfortunately, Alemtsehay is not alone. In Ethiopia, single mothers and their children are enormously vulnerable, often living without shelter and regular meals. The outbreak of Covid-19 has exacerbated their vulnerability. Many single mothers skip meals entirely to be able to feed their children. The quality of the family’s nutrition suffers, as many single mothers cannot afford protein-based foods. All too often, single mothers cannot even afford shelter, leaving the entire family to sleep on the streets. The resulting stress on the physical and mental health of the mother and her children is tremendous, and can leave long-lasting scars.
With your help, it doesn’t have to be this way
YMCA Ethiopia is helping Alemtsehay and her boys survive by providing the family with a small monthly stipend for rent as well as with food and second-hand clothing, which Alemtsehay could otherwise not afford. Thanks to the YMCA’s support program, Nahom receives the medical care he needs.
Since the outbreak of COVID the number of vulnerable single mothers has skyrocketed. Today, YMCA Ethiopia is supporting more than two hundred single mothers, like Alemtsehay, by providing
- nutritious food
- skills training and financial grants for the mothers to help them reenter the workforce or start a business
- small stipends to help mothers pay for shelter
Without the YMCA in Ethiopia, moms like Alemtsehay and children like Nahom would be even more vulnerable.
Our goal is simple but ambitious: to help single mothers in Addis Ababa sustain their families by providing them with food, shelter and medicine and supporting them to start or grow their own business or find decent work. To accomplish this goal, we need your support.
Every donation counts, no matter how small. One-time gifts are gratefully accepted and used to support the mothers and their children in our program. Pledge payments over time can be arranged according to your individual preferences.
Thanks to your generous gift, moms like Alemtsehay and children like Nahom will have hope and the resources they need to create a better future.
