YMCA Ghana

Date of foundation of the YMCA: 

1890

The Ghana YMCA traces its history to 1890, when Wilkins Michael Abbey introduced it to the Gold Coast after his study tour in Europe. The movement has since grown and expanded throughout Ghana, addressing the evolving needs of young people. The YMCA provides services and programs in all administrative Regions. The Ghana YMCA Technical Training Center was established in Accra in 1966 with support from the EZE Protestant Agency for Development. Additional vocational training centers were later established in Takoradi and Apedwa, catering to both boys and girls. The Ghana YMCA also operates day care centers in seven of the eight regions where the Association operates. Some of the programme activities undertaken in the YMCA are: Prayer meetings; Leadership training; Youth advocacy; Talks and debates; Community Service (Voluntary Service).
