The YMCA of Liberia was founded in 1881 by Bishop Samuel D. Ferguson, an Episcopal Bishop to Liberia on assignment from Harper, Maryland County, USA. The YMCA started in Harper and only came to Monrovia in 1926 through the work of James McCritty. Its main programmes include: membership development, capacity building and sustainability, and special educational and social projects.
