After completing senior high school in 2017 with no immediate hope of furthering my education, the YMCA became my refuge and has played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today. Joining the YMCA in April 2017 ignited my passion for service. The vibrant community I encountered and the dedication to youth development resonated with me, and I knew the YMCA was where I needed to be. It was a place where I could grow, learn, and make a difference.
The power of mentorship and community
One of the most impactful aspects of my YMCA journey has been the mentorship I received, both directly and indirectly. I recall when a senior volunteer Nana Kwame Odeneho Amponsah (Greater Accra YMCA President) noticed my enthusiasm and passion to serve and took me under his wing. They shared their experiences, offered practical advice, and connected me with opportunities that challenged and nurtured my growth.
Another mentor, Goddy Nana Mens, through simple yet profound conversations, taught me almost everything about YMCA governance, the importance of listening, empathy in leadership, and many other skills. These mentors didn’t just guide me; they also pushed me beyond my obvious capabilities. They made me feel seen and valued, showing me the true essence of service and leadership. They mentored me by being an example, demonstrating how to lead with compassion and integrity.
Getting back by giving
Volunteering with the YMCA, my happy place, has also broadened my horizons, allowing me to form friendships within and outside the country. These connections have made me more open-minded, helping me understand different cultures and experience various YMCA governance structures.
For instance, I remember attending an international conference where I met fellow YMCA members from diverse backgrounds. Sharing stories and working together on common goals created bonds that transcended borders, forming a global family I cherish deeply.
The YMCA has been more than just an organisation for me; it is truly my home now. Being a member has contributed immensely to my personal growth. What makes volunteering at the YMCA so special, in contrast to other organisations, is the sense of community and shared purpose. Here, volunteering is not just an act of giving; it’s about growing together, learning from each other, and making a tangible impact.
The YMCA’s focus on youth development and its commitment to creating spaces for young people to thrive sets it apart. It’s a place where you’re encouraged to dream big, take risks, and support others in their journey.
I encourage anyone looking to make a difference and be part of a service-oriented community to join the YMCA. Whether it’s through mentorship, community projects, or simply being part of a supportive network, the YMCA offers endless opportunities to grow and contribute.
