INTRODUCTION
This shocking image of Alan Kurdi, aged 3 from Syria, will become the iconic photo of the 2015 European refugee crisis. Unfortunately one image does not do justice to the size and scale of the impact on human life measured by this tragedy. Over one third of Syria’s prewar population has been displaced. “A wave of the world’s displaced crashed on Europe’s shores”, says TIME Magazine.
For the YMCA, when there are injustices against young people our heads must be reminded and our hearts must beat faster with a sense of urgency to bring our mission to life.
We are called to respond. We will focus on young people, helping them to survive the first days, months and the transitions to their new lives.

This document provides a briefing on the YMCAs coordinated response to the 2015 refugee crisis.
It includes information, as well as a framework to develop the plan immediately. It also covers the intention for a plan for an ongoing response to refugees as part of the World YMCAs work.
