As the YMCA marks its 182nd anniversary, we celebrate not only the history of the movement, but also the countless lives that have been shaped through its programmes, communities, and opportunities for growth.
Across the world, the YMCA continues to empower young people to discover their strengths, build meaningful connections, and create positive change in their communities. For many, the YMCA has become much more than an organisation; it has become a place of belonging, encouragement, and transformation.
To commemorate this milestone, young people from YMCA of Macau reflected on a simple yet powerful question: Has the YMCA transformed your life?
Their stories remind us that transformation takes many forms; discovering leadership potential, overcoming personal challenges, finding lifelong friendships, and gaining the confidence to become the best version of ourselves.
Fidelis Iek, from YMCA of Macau
“Over the past ten years, my journey in YMCA of Macau began as a search for “what I could learn and gain” transformed into a journey of discovering “who I could become”. My connection with YMCA was sparked by “The Macau Outstanding Teenagers Election” where I was honored as an awardee in 2016. YMCA of Macau opened doors for me to channel personal learning into impactful leadership through exchange trips, community services, events and gatherings for past awardees, the opportunity to assume the leading role at the judging panel and lead new cohort of awardees in exchange trip. This journey with YMCA has instilled me a lasting mindset of learning, service, and companionship, where I found “Leadership is not about leading followers, but helping others to discover their own value”. The empowerment and inspiration we share will light the path for the new generation.”
Nydia, from YMCA of Macau
“I was deeply impressed by The Qinghai Lake Cycling Challenge Camp for YMCA of Macau volunteer team. The cycling journey was highly demanding on physical endurance. Shortly after it began, my energy was completely depleted and my confidence was shattered by the altitude sickness, leaving me wondering if I could survive the journey. Right at my breaking point, the encouragement from the teammates brought me warmth and enabling me to ride on. It was a moment that made me truly experience the incredible strength of the YMCA team.”
Ku B, from YMCA of Macau
“Being one of the members of the YMCA of Macau volunteer team, I started out as a relative stranger to other teammates. The Qinghai Lake Cycling Challenge Camp provided me a wonderful opportunity to truly bond with other fellow volunteers. Through repeated sessions of meaningful sharing and reflection throughout the riding journey, we grew to understand each other and drew closer. I was blessed to make a few close friends in the volunteer team which is one of my most precious treasure.”
Ka Wai, from YMCA of Macau
“My journey with the YMCA of Macau volunteer team in Qinghai Lake Cycling Challenge Camp was inspiring. During our initial phase of cycling practice, I believe personal effort and individual practice make every challenge achievable. However, the unpredictable weather condition and obstacles throughout the ride made the challenge overwhelming. Through the journey forward, I found that support from teammates and the collective rhythm are what truly matter and together we reached the finish line. This transformative journey unlocked a strength that propelled me forward, driving continuous breakthroughs and shaping a greater self.”
Brian Chao, from YMCA of Macau
“YMCA of Macau provided me a warm space to look beyond myself and appreciate the unique sparks of others around me. My time in YMCA inspired me to cherish the wholeness of every unique individual, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and challenge my limits. Yet, YMCA has always been my stage and my faithful audience, showering me with enthusiastic applause after every single try, ensuring I always have the courage to keep moving forward.”
