In Memoriam – Dale Vonderau – [1924-2014]

Date: 11 March 2014

Dale Vonderau, a visionary leader, great friend, and mentor, passed away on March 9th. We remember him for his great wisdom.  We remember him for the joy and laughter we enjoyed together during many travels and visits to YMCAs with friends around the world. We remember him for his humility and sharp insight that he would bring in the middle of crucial discussions.  Dale was a constant source of inspiration, help, and wise counsel. He was a monumental leader of the YMCA. We were blessed to have known him and today we remember and give thanks for a truly great leader.

Dale’s volunteer leadership roles encompassed more than 45 years with the YMCA as a member of the World Alliance Executive Committee (1977-1988),  Chairman of the YMCA of the USA Board, Chairman of World Service, Chairman of the International Committee, Chairman of the Cleveland YMCA, Senior Advisor on Europe, among other roles. Dale was deeply involved with the YMCAs in Europe – especially in the development of the YMCAs in the post communist part of Europe. He led the process to re-engage European YMCAs and supported the development of the YMCA in Russia through years of service on the YMCA Europe Field Group. He was a great source of inspiration to the European YMCAs and many YMCAs around the world.

We share our condolences and prayers with his family. To send condolences to the family please write to Kay Clagett, P.O. Box 773687, Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80477
