For six months, from the end of 2023 to the beginning of 2024, Youth Champions engaged with young people worldwide to gather insights into their experiences of, and aspirations for, work.
Ninety Youth Champions—YMCA staff and volunteer leaders—from across the globe participated, distributing global Youth Meaningful Work surveys to young people from diverse backgrounds in diverse locations. The survey was conducted in collaboration with Deloitte Australia and The Y Australia, and findings are available here. In addition, the Youth Champions contributed to the new definition of Meaningful work and associated Meaningful Work standards.
After collecting the data, they celebrated virtually and were awarded mentoring prizes. Four Youth Champions – were awarded the overall prize of participation in the YMCA Mombasa Accelerator Summit focused on YMCA Vision 2030, held from October 21-25 in Mombasa, Kenya.
One of the winners was Natan Nkwatcho Woukep Jesse, who has been involved with the YMCA for 14 years. He serves as a Youth Delegate of the local YMCA Nylon and Vice President of YMCA Branch Douala A in Cameroon.
Q. What inspired you to become a Meaningful Work Youth Champion?
Natan: I realised the significance of Meaningful Work in people’s lives. It’s not just about earning a paycheck; it’s about finding fulfilment and purpose and making a positive impact. Helping others discover and pursue Meaningful Work aligns with my goal of enhancing human experiences through conversation and support.
Q: Any stories to share about how the YMCA has impacted your life?
Natan: Certainly! One impactful experience was witnessing a group of teenagers from diverse backgrounds come together at the YMCA to collaborate on a community service project. Despite their differences, they bonded over their shared goal of making a positive impact, teaching me the power of unity and collective action in creating meaningful change. It reinforced my belief in the importance of fostering inclusive spaces where people can come together for a common purpose, regardless of their differences.
Q: What does the future of work look like to you and what role will young people play?
Natan: The future of work is likely to be more dynamic, flexible, and technology-driven. Remote work, automation, and the gig economy will continue to play significant roles, providing opportunities and challenges.
Young people will play a crucial role in shaping this future. They bring fresh perspectives, digital fluency, and a willingness to challenge traditional norms. As digital natives, they are well-positioned to drive innovation, adapt to technological changes, and advocate for more inclusive and sustainable work practices.
Their ability to embrace change, coupled with their desire for purposeful work and social impact, will likely drive a shift towards more meaningful and purpose-driven employment models. They will also push for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, fostering environments where everyone can thrive.
Overall, young people will be instrumental in shaping a future of work that prioritises flexibility, creativity, purpose, and social responsibility. Their contributions will be essential in building a more resilient and equitable workforce for generations to come.
