NICARAGUA YMCA UPDATE

Date: 02 May 2018

An important news update from our LACA General Secretary, Antonio Merino on developments in Nicaragua:

Dear friends,

In recent days, Nicaragua has experienced a tense situation due to students protesting Social Security reforms. The situation turned into violence after the government intervened to stem the unrest. Reports indicate that at least 30 people were killed and significantly impacted the economy.

The population took to streets demanding a peaceful solution. As a result, the government revoked the reforms and opened the dialogue giving hope for the future of democracy in Nicaragua.

YMCA Nicaragua reduced operations during the past few days to protect the lives and security of their staff, volunteers, and participants.

Please keep the people of Nicaragua in your prayers, particularly our colleagues from YMCA Nicaragua and their families.

Fraternally,

Antonio Merino
