On 15 July 2024, six of the leading youth organisations in India came together in a collective push towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event, hosted by the National Council of YMCAs of India in New Delhi, saw leaders from the national Big 6 youth organisations—including YWCA of India, YMCA of India, International Award for Young People (IAYP – The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award), Indian Red Cross Society, and Bharat Scouts and Guides — unite to champion the Global Youth Movement.
Inaugural ceremony highlights
The ceremony began with a welcome address by Eldo N. Varghese, National General Secretary, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries. National Heads lit the ceremonial lamp, signifying unity and shared purpose. Each Big 6 India National leader brought greetings from their respective organisations, highlighting their commitment to fostering leadership and driving positive change.
Key resolutions included:
- Vincent George, President of YMCA India, was elected as Chairman of Big 6 India
- Planning of the first Indian Youth Mobilization Summit for March 2025.
- Targeting 500 young adults (aged 15-30) from all Big 6 India partners.
- Main theme: “Young people’s engagement towards a sustainable future.”
- Sub-themes: Quality Education, Climate Action, Gender Equality, Good Health and Wellbeing, Partnerships for the Goals.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a Statement of Intent and the launch of the Big 6 India website, setting a strategic roadmap to align with the SDGs. This collaboration aims to empower young leaders, initiate projects addressing specific SDGs, advocate for policy changes, and ensure continuous monitoring and evaluation for meaningful contributions.
