Because of the rising living costs and growing demand for community support services in Medicine hat, vulnerable groups often face barriers in accessing essential items and support like affordable goods, inclusive employment opportunities, and sustainable funding for social programmes.
To respond to these challenges, YMCA Southeastern Alberta launched Y Treasure, a social enterprise thrift store that combines community impact with financial sustainability. The store provides affordable retail options, creates employment, volunteer opportunities, diverts reusable goods from landfill, and reinvests proceeds directly into YMCA programmes that support local residents.
Since its opening, Y Treasure has become a hub for community care and through partnerships with local organizations, free clothing and household items are distributed to vulnerable populations, while inclusive employment and volunteer opportunities help individuals build skills and confidence.
