In today’s digital world, access to technology is essential for education, employment, and social participation. Yet for many individuals who lack access to laptops, digital tools, or reliable connectivity, these opportunities can remain out of reach.

Expanding digital access through partnership

Across the United States, HP HOPE device donations are strengthening YMCA digital equity efforts; unlocking access to technology, expanding learning opportunities, and helping young people and communities build the skills needed to thrive in a digital world.

These laptops are integrated into after-school programs, workforce development initiatives, digital hubs, and youth centres, where they are used to support academic tutoring, resume work, digital skills training, and certification courses. These initiatives empower participants with confidence, creativity, and pathways to education and employment.

The partnership is not a temporary intervention but a genuine ecosystem that combines hardware, learning platforms, educator training, and community infrastructure. This allows YMCA to support young people and underserved communities to build digital skills, improve employability, and overcome barriers to participation, guided by a strong commitment to inclusion and gender balance.

HP recognises that reaching underserved communities requires local partners with genuine roots. YMCA delivers this by being locally trusted and accountable, embedded in communities, and knowing how to provide support to those who need it. HP provides the technology and the learning platforms. Since 2022, this collaboration has advanced digital equity by combining HP’s technology, learning platforms, and expertise with the YMCA’s trusted community networks. Together, the partnership has supported digital hubs, device distribution, and skills training initiatives across more than 32 countries, helping millions of young people and community members gain access to technology and the digital skills needed for education, employment, and the future of work.

Growing reach and impact

Since its launch in June 2025, the HP HOPE initiative has rapidly expanded its reach.  In just nine months, 563 refurbished laptops have been distributed across 20 YMCA associations, reaching 19 cities in 16 states and territories.  These programs support youth, immigrants and refugees, families, job seekers and older adults. The impact target for 2026 is to reach approximately 90,000 individuals through skills development, digital access, and workforce readiness programming.

The HP HOPE partnership has quickly activated digital skilling hubs in the US, such as New York, Ohio, South Dakota to South California, just to mention a few; with a multitude of courses and programmes helping individuals with their digital skills. YMCA Hubs engage communities that often face big barriers to digital access, including job seekers, low-income households, immigrants and refugees, older adults and families. These digital hubs operating in schools, universities, YMCA sites and community outreach locations are programmed to each community’s specific needs, but their implementations align around common core themes.

Learning programmes powering the Digital Hubs

Several HP-supported learning initiatives power these hubs and help participants develop practical digital skills for education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

  • HP LIFE:  HP LIFE offers free, accredited courses in digital and business skills, helping young people and adults build knowledge in areas such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and digital literacy.
  • HP Gaming Garage:  HP Gaming Garage uses gaming and e-sports as a learning tool to develop creativity, problem-solving, and digital fluency, while introducing participants to careers in the growing digital and gaming industries.
  • HP AI Teachers Academy:  HP AI Teachers Academy supports educators by providing training in artificial intelligence, coding, and digital safety, equipping them to guide students in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Digital access in action

At the YMCA Seven Council Fires South Dakota, HP laptops are helping teens build practical life skills essential for their futures. Youth participants learned to write professional resumes, prepare college applications, and communicate effectively using digital tools. For many, this access is transformational. One participant shared that using a laptop helped them realize that working with computers could become a future career, demonstrating how access can shift both skills and aspirations.

At the Salina Family YMCA in Kansas, HP laptops supported young people in applying for scholarships and employment opportunities. By enabling participants to search for, prepare, and submit applications, the devices directly contributed to expanding educational and career pathways for young people.

Meanwhile, the YMCA of Sumter in South California is using HP laptops in afterschool programs to help children access technology, participate in STEM learning, and develop foundational digital skills. 91 young pople directly benefited, gaining early exposure to tools essential for academic success and future employment.

Similarly, the YMCA of Greater Toledo, Ohio, received and began preparing HP devices for use in academic enrichment and youth publishing programs. Partnerships with local organisations will enable youth to create original written works while strengthening digital literacy.

HP devices are also strengthening youth career and life readiness programs at the Yonkers YMCA in New York, where over 100 young people engage in coding, financial literacy, and career advancement programming. Through platforms such as HP LIFE and HP Gaming Garage, participants explored coding, budgeting, and digital entrepreneurship, while also using the laptops for schoolwork and skill-building.

As demand for digital education continues to grow, the HP HOPE partnership demonstrates how technology, community trust, and strategic collaboration can expand opportunities.

By combining HP’s technology and learning platforms with YMCA’s deep community presence, the partnership is helping thousands of individuals gain the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the digital economy.
