We are one world family: Fujisan YMCA Global Eco Village

The Yokohama YMCA has begun seeking international volunteers for the summer of 2025. Three of my fellow Change Agents experienced volunteer work as camp leaders at the Fujisan YMCA Global Eco Village. During their volunteer period at Fujisan YMCA, they gave presentations about their home countries and cooked traditional food, which created opportunities for cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of YMCAs on a global level. The Yokohama YMCA has named our campsite the Global Eco Village, and we hope that more international volunteers and campers will join us in the near future.

Below, I would like to share the reflections of the three amazing friends who completed their special summer:

Carolina Arteaga from YMCA Colombia said:

“I wanted to participate in this volunteer opportunity to share my skills, experiences, and Colombian culture, while also gaining new knowledge from the Japanese perspective. By exchanging ideas and seeing how collaboration can strengthen the YMCA’s mission, I felt inspired and energized by the sense of belonging and mutual support during the volunteer activities.”

Jenisha Winslin from YMCA India said:

“I joined this volunteer program to experience cultural exchange, connect with people from different backgrounds, and work with children while learning from Japan’s nature and culture. Watching the little campers bond, laugh, and trust me over time made me feel part of a big family, and the peaceful atmosphere and Mt. Fuji views made it even more special. I’ve gained discipline, teamwork, and cultural understanding that I will apply in my personal life and YMCA camps in India. This experience has strengthened my passion for youth development, and I’m grateful to the YMCA team for their kindness. I leave with lifelong memories, friendships, and a strong wish to return to my Fujisan YMCA home.”

Matthew Jess from YMCA Ireland said:

“I have always wanted to become better connected to the organization on a global level—we are one world family. Working closely with young people and volunteers helped me gain a better understanding of what life is like in Japan. Thank you to everyone for their support during my time at Fujisan YMCA. It has truly been the best summer of my life.”
