The first YMCA in Canada opened in 1851 in Montreal. In 1912, the national body of YMCA Canada was formed. The impact which YMCA has had over the years includes the founding of three universities across Canada, including Carleton University in 1942, York University in 1959, and Concordia University in 1974. Today, there are 39 member associations across the country, 35 YMCAs, and four YMCA-YWCAs. There are programmes offered in more than 1,700 locations, helping more than 2.25 million people each year. The main programme areas are: Camping, Childcare, Employment counselling and training, Health promotion, International development, Outreach, Short-term accommodation, Recreation.
