YMCA Jamaica

Date of foundation of the YMCA:

1966

The National Council of YMCAs of Jamaica was established in 1966 during a District Conference of the Y’s Men’s Club. It aimed to coordinate the existing YMCAs in Kingston, Spanish Town, Vere, and Montego Bay, along with the affiliate District Council of Y’s Men’s Club. The Council facilitated improved communication with other national and international YMCA bodies. However, due to challenges, including poor attendance and difficulties in raising funds, the Council struggled to fulfill its mandate effectively. Consequently, its impact on the YMCA movement in Jamaica has been minimal. During this period, Grace Kennedy provided support by seconding Mr. Basil Ferguson as the National General Secretary, maintaining communication and keeping the YMCAs informed about local and international activities.
