A thousand meals a day in Michigan

Date: 03 April 2020

The YMCAs of Greater Kalamazoo and Sherman Lake in Michigan, United States, are joining forces to provide 1,000 meals per day to vulnerable families. Using food prepared by YMCA staff as well as contributions from local retailers, the Ys will leverage Sherman Lakes’ kitchen facilities and Kalamazoo’s distribution network to provide 500 lunches and 500 dinners each day.

“Our goal is to make sure our community survives this crisis,” says Ben Davis, chief advancement officer for the Greater Kalamazoo YMCA, “which starts by making sure children and families don’t go hungry.”

“In the crisis we’re in now, the most critical needs we see evolving are the ones none of us thought we’d see. Those are families left without healthy, nutritious food because schools are closed for the pandemic.”
