YMCA India

Date of foundation of the YMCA:

1875

The first YMCA in Calcutta was short-lived in 1854, followed by another failed attempt in 1857. However, the association established in 1875 has persevered, alongside the YMCAs in Bombay, Lahore, and Trivandrum. In 1889, the International Committee of the YMCAs of the USA and Canada sent Mr. David McConaughy as the first full-time YMCA Secretary. He played a crucial role in starting the Madras YMCA in 1890 and organizing the first National Convention in 1891, which brought together representatives from 35 local associations. That same year, the Indian YMCA became a member of the World Alliance of YMCAs. The National Council in India holds responsibilities for various programs, including National Youth, Extension and Development, Training and Personnel, and the YMCA Rural Institute.
