YMCA Netherlands

Date of foundation of the YMCA:

1853

The YMCA movement in the Netherlands was founded in 1853 and grew rapidly, with 700 local branches established by 1928. Local associations built their own facilities and offered a wide range of activities including libraries, brass bands, and sports like football, volleyball, and table tennis. Dutch board members played an active role in international meetings, initiating new branches and committees for various purposes. Over time, some clubs specialized and became independent. The YMCA of the Netherlands has been publishing a national magazine since 1857 and has a strong tradition of organizing summer camps both domestically and internationally for young people aged 6 to 25.
