The YMCA of Montevideo, established in April 1909, is involved in various areas including religion, morality, social engagement, recreation, and education. The YMCA played a pivotal role in introducing sports like basketball, volleyball, and swimming to Uruguay, while also pioneering indoor soccer and implementing medical control for improved sports practices. Social development and extension programs were initiated, including working with street newspaper sellers known as ‘canillitas.’ Additional YMCA branches were established in other cities in Uruguay. The main programs provided by the YMCA include education, leadership development training, counseling, vocational youth development, social services facilitation, staff development, collaborations with NGOs and government ministries, mentorship programs, connections with service clubs, and facilitation of church services and meetings.
